Te Huinga
519 Great South Road
Located in the heart of Ōtāhuhu, Te Huinga is where business and culture converge. Its name, meaning ‘the gathering, the meeting, the coming together’, was gifted by Pāora Puru of Ngāti Te Ata Waiohua – a tribute to Ōtāhuhu's role as a historic portage site connecting the Waitematā and Manukau harbours, a place of movement, exchange, and cultural identity.
Grounded in place and story
Originally constructed in 1974 and transformed in 2025, Te Huinga was reimagined in partnership with Isthmus Group and Te Kāhu Pōkere, with cultural design led by Pāora Puru and Mike Tupaea (Ngāti Te Ata Waiohua).
The building was reinvigorated with critical earthquake strengthening work and improved wayfinding; allowing for seamless flow and access for tenants and clients. Occupant comfort was at the forefront of the transformation with newly refreshed bathrooms and end-of-trip facilities, as well as a HVAC refurbishment.
The building’s renewed identity, stands as a reflection of place and people. Te Huinga honours and reflects the cultural landscape of Ōtāhuhu and its living connection to the whenua it stands on.

Thoughtfully designed
Inside, ceiling patterns reference Takitoru, symbolising communication and collective strength, and Kaokao, representing protection and guardianship. On the façade, a exterior screen weaves together three motifs: the Kuaka, a revered guardian for Waiohua iwi and reminder of natural rhythms and renewal; Niho Taniwha, reflecting Ōtāhuhu's three significant maunga; and Unaunahi (fish scales), honouring the three waterways that sustained the community for generations. Not only are they beautiful, the screens work to illuminate the space in natural daylight, while giving occupants views and connection to the outdoor surroundings.
